

NorCal locals knows this portrayal is slightly off.

But this show takes place a world away in Monterey, leading you to believe the Central California community is a high-gloss tech town, an extension of the Silicon Valley. In real-life Northern California, this melodrama would unfold on the Bay Area Peninsula, in say Atherton or Woodside, the epicenter of tech wealth. Madeleine played by Reese Witherspoon quips that she should be working full-time at Google. Renata Klein played by Laura Dern works in tech and is on the board at PayPal. The stars of the show are three type A, wealthy women and one single, less-affluent mom who send their children to the same progressive elementary school that's said to offer a private school education at "a public school price." The park is currently closed east of Highway 1 after the combination of a summer wildfire and winter storms damaged the landscape.

Garrapata State Beach is a pretty place for a picnic or walk. The crew shot crashing waves at this Big Sur beach with dramatic scenery, and the footage appears again and again as symbolism of the women's crashing lives. And these drives often take them along magnificent stretches of California's famous coastal highway. (Case in point: Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Meryl Streep, and Shailene Woodley went bowling at Monterey Lanes during a break in filming last summer.Like most moms, the women in this show are constantly in their cars, carting around their children, zipping off between errands, town, work, school, coffee or cocktails with friends. Plus, the ladies do spend time bonding and conspiring around the towns and hamlets of California's central coast, too, both on-screen and off. While certain characters' homes are actually in Southern California (only the seaside mansion of Celeste, played by Nicole Kidman, is located in Carmel) and several scenes were filmed on sound stages in Los Angeles, it's really more the perception of this kind of life-the panoramic views, waves crashing against giant rocks, red wine by the fireplace, foggy mornings by the pier, the Bixby Creek Bridge-that truly matters, doesn't it? And two, the five ladies' (and Meryl Streep's!) enviably rich lifestyles in Monterey County are still one of the reasons why BLL is such a delightful guilty pleasure. One, this season will be just as good-if not better-than the last. The highly anticipated second season of Big Little Lies premiered on HBO this past Sunday, and it's already made a few things very clear.
